Homeowners can take advantage of tax cuts and credits to make energy efficiency upgrades

While renovating the home, Consumer Reports’ Paul Hope tried to make environmentally friendly decisions.
Switching from a gas stove to an electric stove was easy.
“I’ve always preferred to cook over a gas stove, but I knew that electric and induction stoves have improved a lot over the years and are much better for the environment,” said Hope.
Funded by Congress, the Inflation Reduction Act means homeowners can take advantage of up to $14,000 in tax deductions and credits for energy efficiency upgrades.
CR said how much you can get will depend on how much you earn, where you live, and the improvements you make.
Looking to upgrade to a more environmentally friendly stove, like the Paul stove? Rebates of up to $840 can be within your budget — plus you can get another $500 to cover the cost of converting from natural gas or propane to electricity.
The biggest credits and discounts—up to $8,000 in rebates—are available for a heat pump, a high-efficiency system that heats and cools your home in place of a furnace or boiler and air conditioner.
Although the initial cost of a heat pump may be higher, these incentives will certainly help. In the long run, you can actually save money depending on where you live and the gas and electric costs in your area,” Hope said.
And with discounts to upgrade to more efficient exterior doors, windows and skylights – CR said you’ll add value and warmth to your home.
