The competition invites architects and designers to submit proposals for a “highly affordable, expandable, revolutionary, innovative and aesthetically pleasing” new home that could be built anywhere within the country bordering the Persian Gulf.
Organized by The Buildner and supported by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Center for Government Excellence and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Housing Establishment – the competition aims to identify a 218,400 (Dh1 million) residential concept that can be added to the existing list of housing options for Emirati nationals to choose from when building their future home.
According to the brief: ‘Home and home are not always the same. And while the aspects that make a place your home aren’t limited to physical features, architecture can still have a huge impact. Cultural differences, location, resources, and what your family looks like will influence what you look for in a home. And in a world that seems to be changing faster than ever, can architects and designers anticipate the needs of new-age homes?
For the House of the Future competition, participants were tasked with designing a model of a modern home for Emirati nationals in Dubai. Working in partnership with the Government of Dubai, the jury is looking for innovative projects that use design to modernize existing offerings for locals, bringing them more in tune with the architectural aesthetic of the country and its people.
Dubai is the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates and last year it became The first city in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia region to host a world exhibition. The House of the Future competition comes three years later London-based IJP Architects and Engineer AKT II has won a competition to design a 230-meter footbridge. in Dubai.
The recent House of the Future competition is seeking proposals for a new, self-contained home that could be built anywhere within Dubai and be able to operate off the grid, without water or electricity for at least two consecutive weeks.
The judges will include Mikael Calatrava, CEO of Calatrava International. Charles Walker, Principal of Zaha Hadid Architects; Ahmed Bukhash, founder of Archidentity. and Abdulredha Abulhassan, Executive Director of Rail Planning and Project Development at Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority.
The overall winner – who will be announced on November 30 – will receive a grand prize of £109,200 (AED 500,000) and will see their project go ahead with construction. A second prize of £43,680 (AED 200,000) and a third prize of £21,840 (AED 100,000) will also be awarded along with a special self-sustaining prize for off-grid concepts of £43,680 (AED 200,000).
