Graeme Nicholls wins approval for Glasgow’s O-shape housing scheme

Part of Albion’s car park is allocated between West Paisley Road, Brumlowan Road and Edmiston Drive. The development features a pair of matching semi-circular four storey residential blocks.

These buildings will be finished in red brick with colour-matched mortar. Each block offers 80 two bedroom apartments with sizes ranging from 75sqm2 and 81 m2. All apartments will be dual aspect.

Powered by Merchant Homes and UL Unveiled in 2020The proposal will take place in a 900-seater car park near the Ibrox home of Rangers football club.

During the application process the club undertook a review of all parking arrangements in and around Ibrox Stadium which, according to Glasgow City Council’s planning report, ‘enabled Rangers FC to rationalize spaces by making better use of other spaces available around the stadium’.

The review also highlighted that many supporters with a parking entitlement did not use their parking spaces on match days, meaning the site became surplus to requirements, paving the way for the application to progress.

The scheme was unanimously approved by council members on Tuesday (21 February), with a number commenting on the “unusual” design.

According to the architect, the form of the proposal is ‘sympathetic to and celebratory of the area’s history’ and the previous uses of the scheme, formerly a greyhound playing field and training ground.

An earlier consultation document stated: ‘Historic maps show that the site has a greyhound track with a ‘bowl’ trace, which we think would be interesting to express in any new development. The plan template fits this site well too.

Our scheme also suggests a monochromatic color for the buildings, with shades of red matching the famous Ibrox Main Stand.

“[In terms of form] Our proposal consists of two horseshoe blocks built of uniform bays of brick, featuring stacked windows with arched tops. This form refers to both the formal symmetry of the groups of historic buildings found at Ibrox and also some of the architectural features usually associated with sports buildings and stadiums.

The future schedule of the plot is not yet known.
