What is a charcuterie board?
charcuterie (Pronunciation: “shaar koo tr ee”) comes from the French word for butcher (Charcutiermeaning pork butcher specifically).
A charcuterie plate (also called charcuterie plates or charcuterie plates) is a traditional European offering for a simple breakfast, brunch, or lunch, or as an appetizer for a larger meal.
Charcuterie dishes traditionally feature several types of cheese slices and cured meats, as well as sliced bread (such as baguette or ciabatta), biscuits, fruit (fresh or dried), and various other tasty foods such as jam/jelly, olives, pickles, and nuts or chopped vegetables.
These foods are assembled (in aesthetically pleasing groups, including small plates, bowls, ramekins, etc.) on a large wooden board or platter in small portions to allow a small group to gather and eat from the common plate.
As a friend described it to me: He’s an adult. 🙂
The Charcuterie board trend in the United States has produced all kinds of different funky items, including Charcuterie boards for desserts and Charcuterie trays that feature cooked foods like falafel, tacos, and kebabs.
So here’s what we see: Charcuterie Barbecue Bar is perfect for loading up on your favorite classic American barbecue food!

How to make a Charcuterie Grilled Bar for your next grill
A grilled charcuterie plate like this makes it easy to serve your family and friends at the BBQ – only one tray has all the essentials for 6-8 people! No more running around in and out with this dish and this dish, plus fewer serving dishes to wash later.
1: Select the Charcuterie case and accessories
Since the goal of the charcuterie plate is to make all of your grill fixings look extra pretty, you’ll want to start with a pretty tray!
For Charcuterie, we recommend a large tray, 18-20 diameter or square, With handles and a slight lip or curve on the tip. This prevents things from sliding around as you move the tray and people are doing themselves a favor.
Charcuterie boards are traditionally made of wood, so you can flex your DIY muscles and Build your own tray if you want!
For outdoor grilling, a wooden tray will work, or ceramic, metal, or melamine are good, cost-effective alternatives to the Charcuterie.
To organize the Charcuterie plate food, you will also need some small plates and dishes, such as ceramic plates, dipping bowls, and saucers.
Remember, the goal is to let the food shine, so classic white or glass plates are a great choice!
2: Decide what you offer
What do we put on a charcuterie tray? anything you want!
For the traditional grilled American Charcuterie, we used:
- hamburger
- Sausage
- Hamburger bun and hot dog (served in separate tray or cake plate)
- Ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, relish – in bowls or bowls, with teaspoons or knives for greasing
- Cheese slices – We used sliced American and Swiss cheese
- Pickles and spears (on a plate or small plate)
- lettuce cut into leaves
- Sliced tomatoes
- Sliced red onion
- cooked bacon
- Extras – watermelon, blackberries, potato chips, salt water taffy, oreo cookies

3: Start assembling the Charcuterie Barbecue
For quick assembly so you can eat as soon as food is cooked, chop and divide all ingredients. For items like pickles and tomatoes that might spread their flavors, use a small plate or tray.
While the hamburgers and sausages are on the grill, begin assembling the tray.
You’ll start with the largest of the grilled Charcuterie’s ingredients and then fill in the spaces with the smaller ones. Alternate things as needed to fit them.

Add dishes with spices and dishes with pickles.

Then add larger items like watermelon or lettuce, and leave room for burgers and hot dogs. (We’ve added them here for presentation, but we recommend adding them last, to serve while hot.)

Now for the medium-sized items, such as sliced bacon and cheese. Pre-sliced cheese with leaves between slices makes it easy to add to your burger!

Then add sliced onions, tomatoes and other burgers.

Fill the holes with the smallest items such as chips, cookies, berries, and candy.

Place the cupcakes on a tray or cake plate and you are ready to eat!
